EVOL, Design Solutions Company in Lisbon (Portugal) - Establishing Links between Designers and Craftsmen

Posted by portugal - 2010.03.12
Evol is a design company, founded in January 2004. Its activities are based on the idea of a project held together by rational methodology and a young creative and multidisciplinary team. The two aspects, method versus emotion, create a necessary equilibrium to which the team responds with efficiency to the demands of the business arena in which it operates. Evol has been developing design projects in the areas of communication, production and environment.

One of the projects developed by Evol is “Velhas Técnicas Novos Conceitos” – “Old Techniques New Concepts”. The company is involved in this project thanks to its strategic vision and its current need to innovate. Its aim is to verify the feasibility of the designer/artisan partnership, introducing the design in the handicraft products.

This project was possible because of the initiative of the Fronteira Municipality (located in the Alentejo region in Portugal) in developing a strategy for the region. The Municipality began this mission about 10 years ago by establishing the “Village Academy of Arts and Traditional Crafts”, which functions as a place to create a wealth of high quality products made in the traditional way. The goal is to increase the importance of handmade products through the exchange of work experiences between professionals and, above all, through the increase in quality and competitiveness of local handicrafts.

The link established between the work of designers and craftsmen should be seen as the construction of a range of products of ever-increasing quality. Presenting sophisticated design solutions and improving the quality of the materials gives a new lease of life to this industry in general and helps elevate the finished product up from the “souvenir” shelves to a more prominent place in the marketplace.

The team decided to use the potentiality of the commercialisation of these products and they participated in the event In’Nova, which went on in FIL (Lisbon). This participation was good not only to promote the project as an initiative of experimental character, but also, through this promotion, to listen to the market and to test prototypes.
