PECHA KUCHA - The future of old city centre

2011.01.18
Institution for Cultural Events and Tourism CELEIA Celje presents PECHA KUCHA night - THE FUTURE OF OLD CITY CENTRE.

Pecha Kucha

The future of the old city centre

How can we revive the old city centre? How can we maintain the quality of life in it? Shall its function be touristic, administrative, residential? These are only few of the relevant questions that come on mind when we start to think about the actual and relevant issue of the extinction of the old city centers.

We would like to look for answers collectively and through multiple perspectives thus we decided to organize Pecha Kucha Night. This will be a pilot project that we hope will further develop towards a creative and open platform for debates on the relevant issues for both the local community and wider. The organization and realization of the event will be organized by Zavod Celeia Celje in collaboration with the citizens and institutions in Celje. It will take place on the 3rd of February 2011.

Renovation is not only an architectural restoration of the built structure, it also involves important socio-political and sociological components.

We would like to think about the future of the old city centre through the prism of diverse fields – from architecture to economy, ecology, commerce, tourism and art – and most importantly, in the dialogue and through the active participation of the wider general and professional audience.

The event will be divided into two parts. Evening slot will be dedicated to the presentations of the experts from the field of architecture, town planning, economy, sociology, art and general audience of different age and professions. Afternoon slot will be dedicated to the visions of the youngest generation – the students of the primary and secondary schools in Celje and its surrounding.

Presentations will be held in standard Pecha Kucha format. Each of the participants will have precisely 6 minutes and 40 seconds to present their ideas. Presentations will be accompanied by visual materials – power point presentation of 20 images with each image lasting for 20 seconds. The format of the event, that was organized for the first time in Tokyo in 2003, proved to be efficient and popular – till now 376 cities around the globe has joined Pecha Kucha network. In addition the event is extremely dynamic and participatory thus more than suitable as a tool for fostering public debates on relevant issues.

As part of the event there will also be an opening of the exhibition Architecture of the city: Ten strategical approaches to the City of Celje, organized in collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana.

On the 1st and 2nd of February two artists from Celje will do an intervention into the public place Collections: We collect stories of the past, present and future. Creating an open living room in the centre of the city Celje, they will chit chat with passers by, transforming public place into an intimate space – a space for a dialogue. The collected stories, that will range from anecdotes, memories or visions of the future development of the city will be documented through video and presented at Pecha Kucha night.

In collaboration with Museum of Recent History Celje, a project Urban phenomens will be presented. Also in a video format this time round the life of the city Celje and its future will be explored through the stories of Taxi drivers.

The event as a whole will be documented and uploaded on several online sites, both as a document of a project and as a platform for the future debate on the issues the project will reflect.
