A publication has been developed by the efforts of the participants and organizers of the international conference of the CITIES project, where the authors – designers, artists, cultural politicians, and philosophers - were asked to freely reflect on the humanization of the environment as well as the policy on public urban spaces.
The essays, articles, and interviews analyze the functional and cultural destination of the spaces, possibilities to give sense to the arts, as well as the economic-social reality thereof. The authors of this publication do not endeavour to explain the phenomenon of contemporary art in public spaces unambiguously.

This is only a modest attempt to concentrate on the development of theory and practice in this field, so that the public urban space is not condemned to remain an ordinary, unspectacular square still in the planning stage. This is a reminder that the development of contemporary art is impossible without the strategy of implementation into public spaces, and without the democratic application of urban art, which gives functional and artistic sense to the community’s level of development.
